Q & A with Herban Cowboy -- Organic Grooming

Herban Cowboy is a husband and wife team that creates Organic Grooming, a vegan certified line of organic products for  men (or women who like male products). Co-owner Luke was nice enough to answer a few questions after they got back from a recent trade show here in California.

1. I read on the site that you started the company when you were low on funds. So... why start a product line for men?

Initially, we both had "real jobs."  In fact, my wife was in college, working and helping with the company.  I was also working and trying to transform our "idea" into an actual corporation.  In addition to teaching, I moonlighted in personal care departments of  health food stores for years.  I saw companies such as Burt's Bees, Tom of Maine and Kiss My Face evolve.  Personally, I was frustrated at the lack of natural men's personal care.  We saw a entire segment of the market that was being virtually ignored and decided that men deserve healthy grooming products.

2. I love the name of your company, Herban Cowboy. Lately more men have "come out of the beauty closet" using products just for them. What's been the feedback with your line? 

We received a lot of "it's about time" and "finally" comments.  While grooming products have existed in the conventional categories for years, natural and organic male consumers didn't have a lot of choices until we started.  We are also surprised at the number of "conventional" converts who have ditched the shave cream can for a more eco-friendly option.  So we're not sure if men are really coming out of the beauty closet now, or if they finally just have a more diverse product selection.

3. What can we expect from you in the future? Any plans for an Herban Cowgirl?
