Get your clay (or mud) face on the cheap!

Mud_mask Last night I had a wonderful at home spa treat -- a mud mask. A while back I received a sample kit from From Nature With Love and have been waiting for the kit to be available again so I could tell you about it.
It's in, so I can!

I went scouring the beauty stores looking at the pricing on clay and mud masks. Ridiculous! Most of them are  just these same clays with water and preservatives. Why pay for that when you can experience a full array of muds and clays for just $38?

The Clay Sampler Pack offers two ounce bags of 12 different clays and muds. Now not every clay is suitable for the face, but have some fun -- experiment. Try a mud mask on your hair, your body. Instead of water, try organic fruit juice, yogurt, mashed fruit or oil. Add some corn meal and oats and make a great invigorating face scrub. Discover which clay offers what benefits and try some of these suggested recipes.

So if you like using masks and like saving money, this kit is a wonderful treat for yourself or a friend. FromNatureWithLove.com has an extensive array of ingredients for your D.I.Y. fun. Check them out!

Shave your legs smooth... with shave oil

Shave_legs_2 A few weeks ago I had an event to attend and I'd be wearing a tea-length dress so I had to shave my legs. This is big news because I rarely shave, my legs or underarms. I just don't like it. I have a few sprouts, but in general, I simply accept my hair and shave when I feel the need.

Because I rarely shave, though, there was nothing to shave with! I'd previously made the mistake of dry shaving and my legs slapped me upside my head. So, being the D.I.Y. queen, I grabbed a blended bottle of oil I'd created for my locs. It was incredible and my legs felt so smooth. So if you want to make your own, I'm sharing this easy, quick recipe with you. If you want to buy shaving oil, I've got a link for that as well.

Mama's Organic Belly Oil

Istock_000000409886small

When I had my company my favorite products to make were for the mama to be. I knew they were being used on a belly growing with life and that the aromas would nourish and relax both mama and baby. This recipe is perfect from the day you find out you're pregnant and can help relieve dry skin itch and keep those pesky stretch marks at bay. Handmade and organic.

This recipe yields approximately 8 ounces.

4 oz organic virgin olive oil
1 oz Wheat Germ Oil
1 oz Unrefined Hemp Seed Oil
1 oz Organic Jojoba Oil
1 oz Grapeseed oil

Blend all ingredients in plastic or glass jar. After the first trimester, you can add 2 to 4 drops of Neroli for an aromatic massage oil that can be used throughout your pregnancy, as well as on labor day.

More recipes like this and organic skin care information is in my upcoming book, The Organic Beauty Bible, due out in December.

The Grand Spa Finale

Here's the last four recipes to this wonderful mini-spa escape!

Combine all ingredients in plastic or stainless steel mixing bowl and stir.
Store in glass (preferably) or plastic container

Use no more than 10 drops of essential oil.

This scrub is excellent for feet and full body use. Do not use on the face or children. As long as no water gets into scrub container, shelf life is at least six months.

1 oz Jojoba oil
10 drops of Peppermint oils

In a mixing bowl, stir all ingredients slowly together. Store in glass jar. To each foot bath, add three scoops for refreshed, tingly feet! Shelf life is 12 months.

Coconut Sugar Scrub

This is a wonderful scrub that can be used any time. Make small portions for optimum results.

4 oz fine ground pumice
2 oz Organic Coconut Oil
2 oz Sunflower oil
10 drops grapefruit essential oil (or lemongrass, or combination of both)

Feminine Intuition Soak

This blend made me feel very feminine... all right it made me feel very lusty! It is wonderfully relaxing and is great for a bath of two.

2 oz bottle of jojoba oil
Unscented bubble bath base
Essential oil blend of rose, ylang ylang, frankincense, cedarwood, geranium

Add no more than 20 drops total of essential oil blend to jojoba base. Add bubble bath to running water. Once tub is full, add essential oil blend to bath and enjoy!

Calendula Facial Steam & Indian Rose Toner

Istock_000002031586smallIf you have a chance, be sure to subscribe to Organic Beauty Radio. You can download the program from iTunes or just listen on screen. I do two radio shows a week and we've got some great guests coming up, including Mandy Aftel, one of the premier perfumers in the world; Kathleen Lewis of Kathleen Lewis International and many more. You don't want to miss it. You can also sign up for email updates of the blog so you don't miss on any offers, reviews and interviews!

Now, on to feeling and looking beautiful!

After doing this steam/toner combo the other day, my skin absolutely glowed. Most of the time when we wash our face there is still dirt and oil left. Now that's not a bad thing; we don't want a completely stripped face. But some cleansers do just that! They strip your face of the essential oils you actually need on your face. A toner provides a nice balance. It gently removes excess dirt and oil, without stripping. I recommend buying a pure Witch Hazel extract for sensitive,mature or sun damaged skin (contains no alcohol); for those of us with normal and oily skin, Witch Hazel 86%( the other 14% is alcohol) is perfectly acceptable. Toner should be used twice a day: in the morning after cleansing your face, and before applying your facial moisturizer and makeup. In the evening, before bed use toner before moisturizing (if needed.)

Before starting this part of the mini-spa, you'll need to make your toner. For this, you'll need a 4 oz plastic (or glass) bottle, witch hazel (either 86% or pure distillate), Rose Hydrosol and Sandalwood Essential Oil. Making toner is relatively easy and this one is no exception.

I've chosen Rose (Rosa Damascena) Hydrosol for many reasons. First of which, rose is excellent for facial use and it's properties are well known and documented. A hydrosol is the water left over from the steam distillation process used to extract essential oil. Some people confuse hydrosols with floral water; they are not the same. Floral waters use fragrance, an aromatic synthetic compound with no therapeutic properties, and distilled water, for the most part. I suggest you buy from our suggested retailers are these are people who know their business and sell quality supplies.

Sandalwood (Santalum Album), besides being one of my favorite oils, is wonderful for relieving both dry and oily skin. Studies have shown it to be an effective preventive against skin cancer, as well. Sandalwood is an excellent sedative oil, relaxing you and releasing stress and tension, making it the perfect oil for this toner blend. Be aware that Sandalwood is a pricey oil, but again, do not buy the pre-mixed oils sold in stores. You need a pure therapeutic Sandalwood essential oil.

So now that you have all your ingredients, simply mix one part hydrosol with one part witch hazel and add four to six drops of essential oil. Cap the bottle tightly and flip the bottle, gently shaking up and down to blend. Get some cotton face pads and put your toner to the side, within easy reach for use after your steam.

The Calendula (Calendula Officinalis) steam is essential for great looking skin and can be done every two weeks. Calendula, more commonly known as marigold, has been used for centuries for its healing properties. This annual herb is picked when the petals are coming into bloom and are immediately dried. It is a popular infused oil and is useful in a first aid kit, as it can be used to apply to scrapes and small wounds to help prevent infection. I chose it for the steam because of its astringent and antiseptic properties. This herb can be bought at any local natural food store or at our suggested supplier. Buying a 1/2 pound to a pound is more than enough for casual use.

Now some of you may have an actual facial steamer, which can be bought for under $50, I believe. I, on the other hand, have used the handy big kitchen pot and towel since I was 12! That version is cheap and more useful when adding herbs to your steam. Use what makes you happy and can be easily cleaned of herbs.

Basically, you fill the pot halfway with distilled water (or regular tap) and boil. Once it hits full boil, let it continue bubbling for an additional five minutes then remove from heat. Allow the pot to sit for another five minutes. You don't want to put your face inches from scalding, boiling water. You won't be able to breathe, for one and extremely hot water will damage your skin. While it's sitting, however, add about a handful of calendula petals. It's like making tea. Infusing the petals releases the astringent properties.

Once the water has set for five minutes or so, grab your towel and steam. Stay under at least 10 minutes, breaking every once a while if needed. Get your face good and sweaty. If you're doing this right after the Neroli Facial, be careful not to allow the oil to get into your eyes.

Once you're done (maximum 20 minutes) wipe your face gently with the towel. The Calendula Steam has opened your pores and filtered in astringent and antiseptics. Go to your sink and splash cold water on your face a few times, closing your pores.

Now, take your cotton pads and pour a small amount of toner on it, rubbing it all over your face, staying away from your eyes. As always when applying anything to your face, use in a upward sweeping motion. This will hopefully keep the wrinkles at bay! Your face should now be literally glowing. The toner helps to gently remove any trace of oil or dirt that may be left on your skin, leaving you glowing, healthy skin. Be sure to breath in the scent of the toner, really relishing it!

Next we'll go over the foot scrub and Peppermint Soak. Until then...

Neroli Facial Massage

Istock_000001534616small_12For the application of the items in our spa kit, it's even better if your lover is with you, but if you've got only yourself to love, then light some candles, get a few toys and put on the tunes! (I have an iMix available on iTunes.)

Now on to the Neroli Facial. For this you will need to make an oil blend and have your hand towel soaking in hot water (as hot as you can stand without burning your hands, of course)

To make your blend, have some plastic pipettes for dispensing the base oil and essential oil, get a 5ml or 10ml amber bottle with dropper. Suggested oils for skin types vary, but I would recommend jojoba across the board. Other suggestions: for dry skin, try Kukui Nut Oil; for oily skin (or the ever popular T-zone, Grapeseed Oil is a must.

After you've chosen your oil, use a separate pipette to place your base oil in the bottles, then add up to 2 drops of Neroli Essential Oil in a 5ml blend and up to 4 drops in a 10ml blend. I recommend buying essential oils from essentialoil.com. They have a wide selection and the prices are within a reasonable budget. Be sure to use the pipette to measure the oil accurately as you don't want to waste this!

Once you've made your blend, close the cap tightly and rub vigorously between your hands. This is a synergistic way to blend your oil. Like Bond, we want "gently" shaken, not stirred.

At this point you'll want to get yourself prepared for the facial by washing your face, preferably with a castile soap to strip away any oils and excess dirt. Pull your hair up, if necessary and get situated in your favorite chair and put on the tunes.

Place up to five drops of the blend into the palm of your hands and slowly massage into your face, beginning with your forehead. You need only use the middle three fingers, massaging away from your center toward the hairline, kneading gently like you're making bread. Use the oil sparingly and move over your entire face, feeling the stress start to melt away. Only massage the outer section of your face as we don't want oil to get in your eyes. So move slowly and gently across the forehead, cheeks, chin and neck.

Pay special attention to your jaw area as this is where most of our stress is often held, clenched jaws and such. So when you're massaging this area, be sure to open and close your mouth to really feel it. Yes, you'll look like a guppy fresh out of water, but it feels wonderful and the you'll notice the difference.

This process should take anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes. When you're done, be sure to just lay back and inhale the aroma. The physiological effects of this simple massage is varied:your facial tissue is firmed, your nerves are stimulated, bringing blood to the surface which increases needed nutrition to your skin, superficial wrinkles are reduced and of course, stress is minimized.

Once you've massaged your face, it's time to get that warm towel, wring out the water, open it wide, then place it first on your mouth, then over each half of your face, being careful not to cover your nostrils. Lean back and enjoy for at least 10 minutes or until the towel feels cool to the touch.

Once the towel is cool, you can wipe the excess oil from your face and get ready for the Calendula Steam.

Until then...

Your Own Organic Home Spa

I don't know about you, but life can get very hectic, can't it? Just when I thought I could start relaxing, it appears as if I was busier than before. Being a Type A personality, I can't help myself. I closed my online store, and I foolishly thought that this would give me time to just lay back and relax after six years of research, marketing and building a product line. Relax? My 10-month-old has started crawling, standing and experimental walking; my seven-year-old is convinced she's really 17 and knows everything; (I, on the other hand, am convinced she's the spawn of Satan!); I've started another business and have been scouting for accounts and in the middle of all this, we're preparing for a move to San Diego. Relax? When I'm dead.

So after a tearful outburst directed toward my husband two days ago, I finally realized I should take the advice I give to my clients and escape. It's possible to do even if you have children hanging from every fixture. You do, however, need a spouse, partner or friend to come over to watch the demons while you make your "escape", but as you know, relaxation needs to be planned.

With a few simple ingredients and about two hours, you can have your own mini-spa at home at half the price and emerge feeling beautiful, relaxed and ready to take on the world! Here's the menu and recipes:

* Neroli Facial Massage
* Calendula Facial Steam
* Indian Rose Toner
* Blissful Pumice Foot Scrub
* Peppermint Toes Soak
* Coconut Sugar Scrub
* Feminine Intuition Soak

Supplies you will need:

* A big pot to boil water for facial or a facial steamer
* Dry calendula herbs (six ounces will do, available at any natural foods store)
* A foot spa ( I have Conair, bought for under $50)
* A hand towel
* A glass bottle, approximately 4 oz (available at www.sunburstbottle.com)
* An Unscented bubble bath base
* Essential oils and ingredients
* Available from www.brambleberry.com, www.essentialwholesale.com, www.fromnaturewithlove.com

I have had dealings with all these companies and ingredient are available in sample sizes or 2 ounce to 1 gallon or more. Depends on your needs. Sunburst is great because you can one bottle and cap, or a thousand!

Later today I'll be back with the recipes for your at home mini-spa. Until then...
